Blood Donor Program

At Riverview Animal Hospital we save lives! As a 24 hour emergency hospital we work around the clock to ensure that we are here for you when your pet needs us. Occassionally in emergency situations blood transfusions are required, to ensure we are prepared in times of need we have developed a blood donor program. Blood donors are volunteer dogs that we screen in order to ensure they are the best candidates. Once the donor has been approved, they are put on a list and are called when needed.

What are the requirements for a Dog Blood donor?

The requirements for dogs to volunteer as donors are they must be over 50 lbs, between the ages of 1-8 years old, up to date of vaccines and even tempered.

Can cats donate blood?

Cats can donate blood but it is a little bit trickier. Unlike dogs, cats do not usually stay still long enough for us to collect the blood, therefore they usually need sedation for the procedure.

He is playful and active, requiring much more than the breed data stated 20 minutes of exercise a day.” Mom also tells me, “we’ve trained him to wave with his white paw, it’s one of his favourite things to do”.
